Origins of High-Molecular-Weight Dissolved Organic Matter in the Middle Atlantic Bight: Clue from Lipids and Molecular 13 C Ratios

چکیده
Lipid compositions and compound-specific 13 C ratios of high-molecular-weight dissolved organic matter (HMW-DOM) in the Middle-Atlantic-Bight varied with water depth, implying that the origins of HMW-DOM at different layers of the ocean may differ.

Chemical composition and cycling of dissolved organic matter in the Mid-Atlantic Bight
This study focuses on the chemical characterization of high molecular-weight dissolved organic matter (HMW DOM) isolated from the Middle Atlantic Bight in April 1994 and March 1996. Using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (HNMR) and monosaccharide analysis we compared both spatial and temporal variations in the chemical structure of HMW DOM across this region. Our analyses support ...
متن کاملAre Extracted Materials Truly Representative of Original Samples? Impact of C18 Extraction on CDOM Optical and Chemical Properties
Some properties of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) can be easily measured directly on whole waters, while others require sample concentration and removal of natural salts. To increase CDOM content and eliminate salts, solid phase extraction (SPE) is often employed. Biases following extraction and elution are inevitable, thus raising the question o...
متن کاملDissolved organic carbon fluxes in the Middle Atlantic Bight: An integrated approach based on satellite data and ocean model products.
Continental margins play an important role in global carbon cycle, accounting for 15-21% of the global marine primary production. Since carbon fluxes across continental margins from land to the open ocean are not well constrained, we undertook a study to develop satellite algorithms to retrieve dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and combined these satellite data with physical circulation model prod...
متن کاملActivity and distribution of bacterial populations in Middle Atlantic Bight shelf sands.
Abstract Spatiotemporal variation and metabolic activity of the microbial community were studied in coarse-grained Middle Atlantic Bight shelf sediments in relation to pools of dissolved and particulate carbon. Algal cells were present 8->70 mum) fraction of the sediment held the major share (61-98%) of benthic bacteria. Bacterial and algal cell abundances, exoenzymatic activity, and [DOC] gene...
متن کاملCarbon, nitrogen, and carbohydrate fluxes during the production of particulate and dissolved organic matter by marine phytoplankton
Although the principal source of marine organic matter is phytoplankton, experimental data on carbon and nitrogen mass balance during their growth cycle are lacking. Phytoplankton from diverse taxonomic groups (Synechococcus bacillaris, Phaeocystis sp., Emiliania huxleyi, Skeletonema costatum) were grown in synthetic seawater media, and changes in particulate and dissolved carbon, nitrogen, and...
